8 weeks before moving

6 weeks before moving

Select a moving or rental company and arrange dates for pickup and delivery.

Take inventory of all household items with photos or video before packing for insurance purposes.

Set schedules with real estate agents and cleaning companies.

Select and hire contractors if you are having work done on your new home.


4 weeks before moving

Contact Post Office for change of address and forwarding.

Purchase packing supplies: boxes, tape, marker etc.

Arrange for cleaning of furniture, drapes and rugs.

Contact insurance company to check on coverage during the move.

Notify friends and relatives of your new address.
3 weeks before moving

Properly dispose of items that cannot be moved or are unwanted.

Arrange to leave behind warranties and other information relating to your existing home.

Assemble a moving kit which contains vital and useful items: keys for your new house, credit & debit cards, tablets, cell phones, flash drives, personal documents, medications, flashlights, tool box, etc.

Follow up with contractors to confirm a timely completion.

Start packing unneeded items and label boxes.

1 week before moving

Schedule disconnect or transfer dates with your utility companies.

Clean out refrigerator and freezer

Make arrangements for your pets and children on moving day.

Confirm access to your new home for moving day

Confirm access and parking for the moving truck at your new home.

Arrange for a walk through of your new home with agent.

Continue packing and labeling.
Day prior to moving

Disconnect and prepare appliances for the move if needed.

Set aside items that you want to move yourself.

Pack a box or boxes that you will need when you first arrive at your new house. Mark it "LAST ON AND FIRST OFF THE TRUCK".

Confirm arrival time with your mover.

If moving yourself, dismantle necessary furniture and other items.


Moving Day
-
If possible spend the entire day with the movers.
-
Carry all valuables, documents, cash etc. yourself.
-
Double check closets, attic, garage, basement and other storage areas.
-
Make sure all windows and doors are locked when you leave.
-
Confirm destination details with the movers.
-
Check readings on all utility meters.
